Tasting Notes

Michel Chapoutier, an unconventional visionary, challenging tradition and passionately embracing biodynamics. Dedicated to expressing the soil's essence, his philosophy is deeply rooted in the land. This wine unveils an intense garnet red. Aromatically, it beckons with black fruits interwoven with hints of spice and whispers of ink. The palate is a masterful play of tannins – both commanding and velvety. Notes of smoke and pepper elegantly showcase the quintessence of the Syrah grape thriving on granitic terrain. Depending on its vintage, this wine's graceful evolution can stretch from 30 up to an astounding 75 years.

Winemaking Style:Innovative

Harvest:Hand-picked grapes to small perforated boxes of 15 kg.

Winemaking:The 100% destalked grapes are vinified in concrete tanks. Maceration lasts 4 to 6 weeks in order to obtain silky, stable tannins that will give the wine very long aging potential. Temperatures above 30°C are desirable to favour texture (polymerization of tannins) over aromas. Only free run wine is used for this wine

Food Pairing:Venison steak with blackberry sauce, T-bone steak, Porcini mushroom risotto with truffle oil, Slow-roasted pork shoulder, Kobe beef, Bone marrow flan

Robert Parker

The inky black/purple-colored 2014 Ermitage l’Ermite is more firm, backward and mineral driven than the sexier Pavillon, offering fabulous notes of scorched earth, wood smoke, crushed violets, and both blackcurrant and crème de cassis. An utterly profound effort, it defines the more charming nature of the vintage, displaying building tannin and one seriously long finish. Forget bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

M.Chapoutier

Michel Chapoutier is an emblematic figure in the world of wine, born into a long lineage of vine-growers, the Chapoutier family has been rooted in the Rhône region since 1808. Michel took over the family business, Maison M. Chapoutier, in 1990, bringing with him a revitalized approach and a deep respect for terroir and biodynamic viticulture with the entire estate being certified, a rarity for an estate of its size. His philosophy is founded on the belief that a wine should express the place from which it originates, the "terroir". This approach involves minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery, ensuring the wines remain true reflections of their origin. Throughout his career, Michel Chapoutier's unyielding passion, combined with his pioneering approach, has earned his wines a plethora of accolades. Today, Maison M. Chapoutier remains a beacon of the Rhône Valley, with Michel at its helm, continually pushing the boundaries of winemaking and ensuring each bottle tells the story of its terroir.
