Tasting Notes

The 2022 Diana Madeline is a culmination of over 50 years of dedication ef fort and respect for the land to make the best quality wine. A complex bouquet of ripe cherry, mulberry, and dark chocolate is lifted by delicate violet, rose, and subtle hints of ironstone and curry leaf. On the palate, the wine is rich and structured, with juicy layers of cherry, mulberry, and chocolate wrapped in fine-grained tannins that support ethereal fruit. The unctuous texture and layered complexity invite repeated sips, offering both immediate pleasure and long-term potential. This wine drinks beautifully now and is crafted to evolve gracefully over the next 50 years, revealing ever-deepening nuance and sophistication.

An Australian icon. The nose is deeply perfumed and elegant with an underlying power, giving aromas of blackcurrants, mulberry bush, tobacco leaves, violets, blueberries and ferric earth. The full-bodied palate has seamless tannins and an incredible array of complex flavors: wild-blackberry compote, graphite, tea leaves, blood plums, dark cherries and mocha. A superb wine that will live for decades to come. Made from 89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% malbec, farmed biodynamically. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The best wines are distinctive with a clear DNA link to place. Diana Madeline is one such wine. An excellent deep purple hue with an ever-changing array of aromas: one minute spice, mulberries and cocoa when first poured, and next full of savoury notes of black olive tapenade, nori and menthol. As usual, it’s beautifully framed yet the fuller-bodied palate is plumped up by textural, expansive tannins and finishes long. Get a spot ready in the cellar, this has time on its side.

Cullen Wines

In 1966, on the advice of eminent agronomist, Dr John Gladstones, Dr Kevin John and Diana Madeline Cullen and friends undertook a trial planting of vines in Wilyabrup, Margaret River. In 1971, they established Cullen Wines with the first vines planted on their sheep and cattle farm; these are now the iconic Cullen cabernet sauvignon vines. All Cullen Wines are grown on a certified biodynamic, organic, carbon neutral and naturally powered estate. In 2020, Chief Winemaker Vanya Cullen was awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in the Halliday Wine Companion and the winery voted 'Best in Australia' by Huon Hooke’s The Real Review. In 2021, Vanya was the recipient of Halliday’s 2022 Wine Companion Inaugural Viticulturist of the Year Award.
