Tasting Notes

Lacourte-Godbillon stands among Champagne’s most compelling grower-producers, led by Géraldine Lacourte and Richard Devignes in the Premier Cru village of Écueil, Montagne de Reims. Family-owned for generations, the estate is planted predominantly to Pinot Noir (85%) with Chardonnay (15%). Their wines are expressive and precise, offering aromas of toasted orchard fruit, pear, apple, brioche, and hazelnut, layered with a subtle saline edge. The palate is vibrant and finely textured, showing citrus zest, kumquat, and white florals, finishing long, dry, and distinctly mineral, often in an Extra-Brut style.

Winemaking:Minimal intervention approach focused on purity and terroir expression, vinified in a combination of temperature-controlled stainless steel and oak barrels, with indigenous yeast fermentation, gravity-fed cellar work, and low sulphur additions. Extended lees ageing and restrained dosage, typically in an Extra Brut or Brut Nature style, further enhance precision, texture, and site expression.

Viticulture:Estate vineyards centred in Premier Cru Écueil, Montagne de Reims (95% of holdings), with sandy clay over chalk soils. Low-yield farming, with strict bunch selection to prioritize concentration and expression. 30-40+ vine age.

Food Pairing:Oysters, scallop crudo, lobster, sashimi, tempura vegetables, roast chicken, Comté, triple-cream cheeses.

This impressive NV champagne shows what generosity and charm pinot noir is capable of in champagne. Impressive depth, but also lovely candied-citrus juiciness. Then comes a long and elegant, chalky finish. A cuvee of 85% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay, based on the 2018 vintage with 35% reserve wines from earlier vintages. It’s actually entitled to the Extra Brut designation, thanks to very low dosage. Sustainable. Drink now.
