Tasting Notes

The 2024 Cabernet Merlot delivers the hallmark purity and precision expected from Cullen’s biodynamic vineyards. The nose opens with lifted aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, and dark cherry, supported by fine herbal nuances of bay leaf, dried sage, and subtle cedar. Hints of graphite and cocoa add depth without overwhelming the fruit. The palate is elegant yet confidently structured, showcasing vibrant cassis and redcurrant wrapped in refined, silky tannins. Beautiful natural acidity drives length and freshness, while notes of plum skin, tobacco leaf, and a gentle mineral thread provide complexity through the mid-palate. The finish is long, composed, and savoury, with neatly integrated oak sitting in the background. A poised and harmonious blend that reflects both site and season—expressive in youth, with clear potential to evolve gracefully over the next decade.

The Wine Front

Gary Walsh

A very purple tasting wine here with a mix of blue and black fruits, pimento/capsicum, baking spice, dried roses, and something a bit ferrous. It’s medium-bodied, but quite thick and chewy, not polished up too much, and also has some bitter dark chocolate in the mix, blackcurrant, dried herbs, balanced acidity, and a finishes with some roast red capsicum and a fair bit of perfume. Lots of Cullen in your glass at pretty fair price, if you take my meaning.

A beautiful luncheon Claret style red that delivers an array of intriguing scents and flavours starting with lavender, rose water, sweet tobacco and rolling into boysenberry, cassis and dark cherry. A touch of dried leaf and ferrous, sweet earthiness also appears. The wine is composed, near refreshing in cool acidity and lithe tannin. Gulpable stuff.

Cullen Wines

In 1966, on the advice of eminent agronomist, Dr John Gladstones, Dr Kevin John and Diana Madeline Cullen and friends undertook a trial planting of vines in Wilyabrup, Margaret River. In 1971, they established Cullen Wines with the first vines planted on their sheep and cattle farm; these are now the iconic Cullen cabernet sauvignon vines. All Cullen Wines are grown on a certified biodynamic, organic, carbon neutral and naturally powered estate. In 2020, Chief Winemaker Vanya Cullen was awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in the Halliday Wine Companion and the winery voted 'Best in Australia' by Huon Hooke’s The Real Review. In 2021, Vanya was the recipient of Halliday’s 2022 Wine Companion Inaugural Viticulturist of the Year Award.
