Robert Parker

Almost entirely Grenache (there's 1% Syrah), the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Vaison la Romaine Cesar aged in oak vats. It features shadings of vanilla and cedar but also plenty of cola and black cherry fruit. Full-bodied and velvety, it's concentrated and rich, with attractive spice notes on the long finish.

Very deep, smoky and rosemary-scented. Medium-bodied, good acidity, with measured tannins. Remarkably controlled and restrained for the vintage. It has some easy-drinking finesse. A very good pick in 2019. Not complex, but very well balanced and fresh.
