Tasting Notes

The 2021 Loveblock “Someone’s Darling” Pinot Noir is a bright, elegant expression of Central Otago, showing ripe black cherry and dark plum layered with violet, forest floor, and a whisper of toasty oak. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity give structure to its lush red fruit core, while a hint of spice and earth lingers on the finish. This wine is an honest reflection of rugged terroir and low intervention winemaking.

Wine Ageing:The wine was matured in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels to enhance texture, structure, and aromatic complexity while preserving the purity of fruit.

Winemaking Style:Traditional / low-preservative

Harvest:The 2021 vintage in Central Otago delivered a long, dry growing season with cool nights and ample sunlight, allowing for slow, even ripening. The fruit was harvested in small parcels at optimal physiological ripeness, preserving natural acidity and varietal purity. Yields were modest, contributing to the wine’s depth and intensity.

Winemaking:Crafted with a minimal intervention philosophy, the wine was vinified to express both site and vintage. Each clone was fermented separately in small open-top fermenters with gentle hand plunging to maintain fruit purity and tannin finesse. A portion of whole clusters was included to enhance aromatic complexity and structure. The wine matured in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels, where it developed texture and subtle spice. It is vegan-friendly and accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

Viticulture:The fruit was sourced from the Someone’s Darling vineyard in the Bendigo subregion of Central Otago, one of New Zealand’s most extreme winegrowing environments. Planted in 2008 on free-draining Molyneux soils—sandy loam over schist gravels—the site benefits from long daylight hours, strong diurnal shifts, and minimal rainfall. Sustainable practices and a deep respect for the land guide vineyard management, with a focus on soil health, biodiversity, and low chemical input.

Food Pairing:An excellent match for Turkey, Salmon, Lamb, and Beef.
