Michel Chapoutier, an unconventional visionary, challenging tradition and passionately embracing biodynamics. Dedicated to expressing the soil's essence, his philosophy is deeply rooted in the land. Le Méal Rouge 2019 unveils a deep garnet red hue, kissed with youthful purple highlights. The bouquet tantalizingly offers ripe fruits, entwined with whispers of smoke. On the palate, robust tannins emerge, seamlessly melding into a velvety texture and flavours reminiscent of sumptuous blackberry jam. With the passage of time, this wine's potential magnifies; depending on the vintage, it promises to evolve gracefully anywhere from 30 to a staggering 75 years.

Wine Ageing:Wine is matured in new or one year old cask. Maturing lasts between 14 and 18 months.

Winemaking Style:Innovative

Harvest:Hand-picked grapes to small perforated boxes of 15 kg.

Winemaking:The harvest, totally destemmed, is vinified in a small cement vat. High temperature maceration enables a good extraction of grape potential, to obtain soft and stable tannins, compulsory to keep the wine for a very long time. Only the free-run juice is used in this single vineyard.

Viticulture:The wine is only produced with grapes coming from the Méal hillside. This slope is composed of high terraces of shingles and clay. The vines are about 50 years old.

The inky hued 2019 Ermitage Le Méal offers up a classic, kaleidoscope-like bouquet of red and black fruits, smoked meats, crushed stone, spice, and burning embers. Full-bodied, ripe, and opulent, it has a wonderful sense of balance, incredible concentration, and one hell of a great finish. This cuvée comes from the middle of Hermitage Hill and the more alluvial and loess soils of the Méal lieu-dit. It was all destemmed and spent 18 months in a mix of barrels and demi-muids, with 20% being new.

At first very leathery and animal in the nose, then the smoke wafts in and is followed by candied-orange, tobacco-leaf and coffee notes. Very concentrated, but focused and elegant for this appellation. Invigorating freshness at the long, stony finish. So dynamic! From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
