Tasting Notes

Founded in 1979 by a determined Cypriot and a Californian dreamer, Marion’s Vineyard helped pioneer the cool-climate potential of Tasmania’s Tamar Valley from an untamed patch of bush and rock. Still family-owned today, the next generation continues the legacy with wines of richness and character, showing layers of dark cherry, blackberry pastille, mocha and cedary oak, wrapped in a plush, textured palate with savoury tannins and vibrant freshness.

Harvest:The 2022 season began after a dry winter with early budburst. Despite a very wet summer with over 180 mm of rain during harvest, the well-drained site and drying winds helped maintain healthy fruit under organic and biodynamic management. Yields were lower, but fruit quality and flavour were strong.

Winemaking:Handpicked, vineyard sorted, and de-stemmed straight to small open fermenters with no sulphur. A portion of 15% whole bunch was added to each fermenter at the bottom of the vat. Fermentation began naturally after 4 days and was pressed after fermentation completed, straight to new French puncheons and older French barriques. Just prior to bottling the wines were racked off gross lees by gravity to the blending tank and a light filtration.

Viticulture:Marion’s Vineyard, planted in 1980 in Deviot within Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, is set on Jurassic dolerite over basalt clay soils. The site features an east–west aspect and is planted to an unknown selection alongside MV6 clone material, reflecting its historic, low-intervention origins and site-driven character.

Food Pairing:Beetroot and goat cheese sausage rolls, Duck confit and beetroot salad with pomegranate balsamic reduction, Beetroot and goat cheese ravioli, Duck rillettes, Duck sausage, Mushroom risotto, Duck breast, Game stew.
