Tasting Notes

Shiraz, with its roots in the Old-World Rhône and its evolution into a celebrated South Australian icon, takes on a distinct expression in the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs. Sourced from six unique blocks on this elevated site, the wine showcases a deep, almost impenetrable ruby-red hue. On the nose, it reveals complex aromatics of mulberry, mocha, and black olive tapenade. The palate is rich and dense, filled with dark, concentrated black and purple fruits that envelop the senses. As the wine unfolds, layers of distinctive minerality and subtle rosemary undertones emerge, adding depth and complexity. It finishes with excellent length, supported by finely structured tannins that ensure a dry, persistent finish.

Harvest:The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we are pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

Winemaking:Destemmed and selectively sorted. 50% whole berries. Wild yeast fermentation. Open fermenters and on skins for up to 15 days, a gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. No pressings were used in this wine.

Viticulture:Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in Blewitt Springs, at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône. Along with Australia’s First Families of Wine, committed to reducing carbon emissions and reaching net carbon zero targets by 2035.

Halliday Wine Companion

From six estate blocks, split between ironstone and sand, destemmed with half left as whole berries; élevage in French puncheons, with 25% new and the remainder 1–3-year-old oak. This is remarkably pretty upfront, bursting with red berries and cherries, underneath a bedrock of ferrous minerality – the split of soils writ large – along with baking spices and rosy florals. Trademark Yangarra tannins kick in swiftly and carry the flavours long through a savoury finish. This is charming, but it’s also built for food. Seems like a very fine year for shiraz at this address.

The Real Review

Bright, deep purple colour; aromas of dark plum and blackberry with a slightly smoked-meaty reductive overtone. The wine is rich and deeply fruit-sweet on the palate. Blackberry conserve. Luscious fruit and abundant soft, powdery tannins.

Yangarra Estate

Yangarra Estate, located in the Blewitt Springs district of McLaren Vale, South Australia, is a biodynamic vineyard renowned for its unique terroir. With 54-million-year-old geology and wind-blown sands, the region's higher elevation and cooling maritime climate create ideal conditions for growing the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône. The estate, first planted in 1946, spans 87 hectares, with Grenache and Shiraz as its flagship varieties. Since 2000, Peter Fraser has been the winemaker and visionary behind Yangarra. His approach to winemaking is focused on vineyard expression, believing that the key to great wine lies in preserving the authentic taste of the land. Peter's deep experience includes extensive time spent working in cellars and vineyards across Australia, Spain, France, and the U.S. His expertise earned him the title of 2016 Winemaker of the Year by James Halliday, and in 2018, he was nominated as Best Winemaker by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
