Annamaria and Clara Sala are two sisters continuing the legacy of Italian wine left by their great grandmother, Dora, after over 100 years of production by their family. Imagine being on a hillside of Sicily with the fresh Mediterranean breeze on your skin, sipping an Italian wine that has stories of immeasurable generations to tell. The wines produced by Annamaria and Clara Sala showcase a journey of passion, family, and breaking barriers in the wine arena, which has been, by tradition, male ruled.
A Legacy Born of Passion: Great-Grandmother Dora
The narrative of Tenuta Gorghi Tondi began in the late 1800s with Dora, the sisters' great-grandmother, of the first to plant an Italian wine. Dora was bound to break a stereotype of women at such a time in history when they were not usually in business. Buying a 130-hectare former hunting reserve, she set about producing one of the world's finest Marsala wines. Today, the grape varieties which she planted, Grillo, Catarratto, and Zibibbo, define the estate's wines.
The legacy that Dora has built remains alive today, passed from one generation to another in the growing minds of Annamaria and Clara – who still push boundaries while preserving the traditions that made the Gorghi Tondi estate a gem.
Dynamic Sister Duo: Annamaria and Clara Carrying the Torch
Presently, Annamaria and Clara form the fourth generation at Tenuta Gorghi Tondi, bringing in an interface of tradition and innovation to the estate.
The commitment to sustainability and preserving the heritage of the native Sicilian grapes such as Frappato, Grillo, and Zibibbo. The winery has been integrated with nature since its inception, located in an area that became WWF protected in 1998.
Grillo Wine and Beyond: A Taste of Sicily in Every Glass
Gorghi Tondi produces wines with the soul of Sicily: Grillo is at the very heart of what they do, but wines also shine in expressions of Frappato, fresh and lively red that tell of the land that the Sala family worked for centuries. Annamaria and Clara emphasize how the uniqueness of terroir and climate can stand their wines apart.
For instance, the Tenuta Gorghi Tondi Grillo 2021: an Italian wine that just explodes with powerful yet nuanced aromas of passion fruit, mint, and pineapple. The palate is full, delicate, and lively, the best of Sicilian wine craftsmanship.
The other masterpiece is the Frappato DOC Sicilia Dumé 2023: ruby-red, bright and compact in colour, the wine offers complex fruity notes of blackberry, raspberry, and pomegranate on a smooth and refreshing palate. Zibibbo is one of Annamaria's favourites, immediately taking you to the citrus-laden coast of Sicily with a bright, fresh profile that throws you into the Mediterranean.
Every bottle speaks to family tradition and the land with a deep relationship to nature.
