Tasting Notes

This is a serious Sparkling Red. The nose is deep and compelling; black, brooding, with hints of sweet ripe, cherry-to-plum fruit, then sweet old leather, with a lick of boot polish that smells both intriguing and inviting. Then come notes of cracked black pepper and dried thyme, with just a touch of star anise. The palate is supple, earthen, rich and round with a fine dry spice. It's vibrant and alive, with a long savoury finish. It's very well balanced, the fruit and tannin deliver wonderful fruit sweetness and is best served just a bit below room temperature, certainly not cold. A wine of spicy complexity and structured elegance.

Halliday Companion - Ned Goodwin MW

Light years away from most sparkling red, this was made in the traditional method with a whopping 6 years on tirage and further time in bottle, post-disgorgement, to settle down. Moreover, the dosage is 6g/l. Subsequently, the finish is defined as much by a tannic twine as it is by the fizz and acid tow. Aniseed, blackberry and violet notes are sashayed along the mouth by a joyous energy to a savoury, bitter finish. It drinks like an artisanal Lambrusco. A serious red, this... with fizz! Scented and gorgeous.

Castagna

Julian and Carolann Castagna left their careers in the film industry to establish Castagna Vineyard. They aimed to create unique wines capturing the essence of Côte-Rôtie, a style then rare in Australia. Located in Northeast Victoria, the vineyard, certified organic and biodynamic, features Syrah vines planted in 1997, descendants of 1850s Rhone stock. With a focus on quality over quantity, their meticulous approach includes hand-pruning, hand-picking, traditional winemaking techniques, and careful aging in French oak. The vineyard's biodynamic practices highlight the granitic-loam soil's minerality, and they utilize rare genetic material from Australia to craft exceptional wines. The vineyard's continental climate and unique soil composition further contribute to their distinctive wines. Castagna Vineyard has successfully carved out its niche in the world of wine.
