Opening to a darkly enriched appearance, the 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Guado de' Gemoli is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Merlot (10%). Giovanni Chiappini is an estate with moments of inspiration and other moments of lessened consistency. The wines tend to be very vintage-sensitive. However, this wine from the hot and dry 2017 growing season nails it on the head. There is bold intensity for sure, but the fruit is not too heavy or overripe. The oak tones are dry and not very evident, but they are, for the most part, folded into the wine's generous texture. About 8,000 bottles were released.
