Tasting Notes

Moppa Shiraz is deep purple-black in colour. The aromatics are instantly uplifting and beguiling. Quite a spectrum including blueberry, plum, musk, cinnamon spice, flower garden, malt, black liquorice and a hint of oak. The full-bodied palate is equally interesting. Well-poised with the innate balance of muscularity and elegance. There is an expanse of red, blue and black fruits set with a fine but notable profile of natural tannin adding structure and a graceful oak presence giving further depth and complexity. The finish is long and completes a polished wine.

Winemaking Style:Traditional / low-intervention

Harvest:Vintage 2020 has delivered wines of amazing quality. However, quantity is very limited, with it being one of the lowest grape yields ever in the Barossa.

Winemaking:One lot of Shiraz was co-fermented on the skins of Viognier. The Petit Verdot is a late ripener and was harvested on March 31st. All batches were wild fermented in open-top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice a day during fermentation. After 7 to 14 days on skins, the fermented grapes were traditionally pressed. On completion of maturation, a portion of Petit Verdot and Shiraz/Viognier was blended for added complexity.

Viticulture:Moppa grapes are from nine different blocks on the Kalleske’s organic farm, with the oldest of these blocks planted in 1961. The vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay, providing ideal conditions for these varieties.

Food Pairing:Sirloin steak, Lamb chops, BBQ ribs, Spaghetti Bolognese, Pepper-crusted tuna steak, Beef stew, Mushroom risotto, Spicy sausage and peppers, BBQ lamb chops.

Halliday Companion - Dave Brookes

A wonderfully perfumed shiraz from the Kalleske clan, from certified organic and biodynamic fruit from the Moppa subregion. There's a wee bit of petit verdot (8%) which accounts for those deep black fruit bass notes, while a smidgen of viognier (3%) explains the jasmine and frangipani high-tones to the deep plum and blackberry fruit below. There's a lot to like here; first the price, then that plush spicy fruit, washed with fragrance and inherent drinkability. Very nice.

Kalleske

The Kalleske family, rooted in South Australia's Barossa Valley since 1853, is known for their exceptional grape-growing across seven generations. The journey began in 1853 when they founded their farm in Moppa, a sub-district of the Barossa Valley. Today, the property encompasses vineyards, livestock, a chaff mill, and a winery, maintained by the sixth and seventh generations. In 2002, brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske established the Kalleske winery to emphasize the potential of their vineyard through traditional winemaking. Their 120-acre estate, managed by John, Lorraine, and Kym Kalleske, features a variety of grapevines, some dating back to 1875, with an impressive average vine age of 50 years. The Kalleske estate has been proudly certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to organic practices in both their vineyard and winery.
