Tasting Notes

This classic southern Rhone blend bursts with aromas of mulberry and cherry confection over notes of fragrant violets and myrtle pepper. The inclusion of a high percentage of whole clusters in this stellar vintage provides extra lift to the nose with sweetened chai spice aromas, perfectly balanced by a touch of dry herbs and savoury jamon. The palate is initially juicy and sweet, combining crunchy red plums and red liquorice from the Grenache, with Syrah and Mataro adding structure, spice and savouriness. The finish is persistent with layers of cocoa, coffee liqueur and a frame of firm but fine tannins.

Wine Ageing:Large format oak casks

Winemaking:A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mataro. Each parcel was harvested and vinified separately in vertical, open top stone fermenters with no temperature control. Grenache was fermented with 50% whole clusters, while Syrah and Mataro were destemmed, but the berries were not crushed. The fruit spent between 8-14 days on skins before being gently pressed directly into large format oak casks for malolactic fermentation in our underground cellar.

Viticulture:100% Hazel’s Vineyard - biodynamically farmed and the southernmost vineyard. Hazel’s combines cooling Southern Ocean influences (12km from the ocean) with a northerly aspect and plenty of sunshine.

Food Pairing:Braised lamb shanks, Pan-seared filet mignon, Beef bourguignon, Lamb kebabs, Coq au Vin, Sausage and peppers, Stuffed bell peppers Provençale.

Halliday Companion - Erin Larkin

Hazel's vineyard was only planted in 1999 and already this smacks of pedigree. Let's start at the finish: this is a ripping wine. It has both radiant and pretty fruit on nose and palate. Firm, structuring tannins pervade every aspect of the experience and the oak serves to hold it altogether in an unseen way. This is delicious and serious. Brilliant winemaking and craftsmanship. What a pleasure.
