Tasting Notes

Tsantali's 'Pantheon' Rapsani is a cuvée crafted from indigenous Greek grape varieties, including Xinomavro (offering cool, almost Burgundian characteristics), Krasato, and Stavroto, all grown in the wine-producing region of Rapsani on the slopes of Mount Olympus. It presents a rich, purple-red hue with spicy notes and a hint of blackcurrant fragrance. The taste is both rich and soft, suitable for immediate enjoyment.

The 2015 Rapsani Reserve is a roughly equal blend, typical in this appellation, of Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto. The difference between the regular Rapsani and this is largely greater oak treatment and, more importantly, higher-altitude terroir. This is sourced from vines from 250 to 500 meters. That actually makes this seem more elegant initially. On first pour, it doesn't coat the palate as well, but it seems brighter. There is better finesse but not a lot more concentration. Some aeration really improves this, however. It allows this to flesh out and become more interesting. With the extra year of aging in the bottle, thanks to the late release, this is also better developed and definitely more pleasing to drink. The finesse and focus are also better. Overall, the step up is modest in some ways, but there is one. The extra year of aging, in particular, is worth paying for. This graceful red seems ready to drink.
