Tasting Notes

This Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre blend draws inspiration from the classic estate blends of the southern Rhône. The Grenache is carefully selected from a mix of both young and old bush vines, ensuring a balance of freshness and depth. The Shiraz is chosen for its elegance and aromatic complexity, while the addition of Mourvèdre contributes to the wine's fragrant profile and enhances its tannin structure, providing a solid backbone to the blend.

Wine Ageing:Matured in a mixture of old French oak puncheons, ceramic eggs, and amphora for 11 months.

Winemaking Style:Minimal Intervention

Harvest:The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we are pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

Winemaking: 42% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, 25% Mourvèdre. Each variety handled separately. Destemmed and selectively sorted in the winery. 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast ferment. Each variety has a unique maceration, however a unifying principle of a very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap, for a minimum of 14 days.

Viticulture:Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in Blewitt Springs, at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône. Along with Australia’s First Families of Wine, committed to reducing carbon emissions and reaching net carbon zero targets by 2035.

Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

A blend of 42/33/25% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre. Gentle extraction across a variety of regimes, with some extended skin contact for parcels of grenache; matured for 11 months in a mix of older French puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. This is the wine to drink while the Old Vine Grenache slumbers for a few years yet. There’s the tannin drive and savoury cast of grenache from the vintage still, but the shiraz contributes some prettier red fruits (usually the other way around, perhaps, but such seems the year). Cherry, sour plum, dried raspberry, scrubby herbs, struck iron, brown cardamom and mace. This, too, could rest for a bit before broaching, but it’s fine drinking either way. Drink by 2028

Yangarra Estate

Yangarra Estate, located in the Blewitt Springs district of McLaren Vale, South Australia, is a biodynamic vineyard renowned for its unique terroir. With 54-million-year-old geology and wind-blown sands, the region's higher elevation and cooling maritime climate create ideal conditions for growing the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône. The estate, first planted in 1946, spans 87 hectares, with Grenache and Shiraz as its flagship varieties. Since 2000, Peter Fraser has been the winemaker and visionary behind Yangarra. His approach to winemaking is focused on vineyard expression, believing that the key to great wine lies in preserving the authentic taste of the land. Peter's deep experience includes extensive time spent working in cellars and vineyards across Australia, Spain, France, and the U.S. His expertise earned him the title of 2016 Winemaker of the Year by James Halliday, and in 2018, he was nominated as Best Winemaker by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
