Tasting Notes

Michel Chapoutier, an unconventional visionary, challenging tradition and passionately embracing biodynamics. Dedicated to expressing the soil's essence, his philosophy is deeply rooted in the land. Draped in a deep golden yellow hue, Ermitage “De l’Orée”exudes intensity. Its aroma is a vivid tapestry of sun-warmed shingles, rich toffee, and lusciously ripe lemon, interwoven with the floral fragrances of acacia and hawthorn. The palate embarks on a well-rounded journey, revealing layers of ripe fruits, subtle spices, and hints of roasting. Its finish lingers, ultimately refreshing the senses.

James Suckling

The freshness and vibrantly focused style here is super impressive. A stony and flinty nose leads to notes of freshly baked bread crust, white peaches, lemons and grapefruit with nicely delivered oak spice and nuttiness. The palate has a very composed core with fine, powerful and focused flavors of peaches, pears and grapefruit and a minerally, focused, lightly spiced finish.

There are a substantial 909 cases of the 2017 Ermitage de l'Orée. Sourced from Les Murets' clay soils, it combines hints of struck flint with honey, pear and baking spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with a layered sense of richness and ample concentration, it's a big but balanced wine. While it lacks the zest and freshness of the 2016, it should still drink well for close to two decades

Decanter Magazine

Rich and opulent on the nose, with yellow peach and honeycomb. Very full bodied, with that immediate internal sweet ripeness of fruit that often marks out this cuvée. Good balancing acidity here, with real intensity of concentrated sappy fruits. Huge length, impressive power and a great mineral expression. It coats the mouth, and somehow stays fresh despite its richness. Old vine Marsanne (over 70 years old) grown on the pebbly, sand and clay soils of the lieu-dit Les Murets.

M.Chapoutier

Michel Chapoutier is an emblematic figure in the world of wine, born into a long lineage of vine-growers, the Chapoutier family has been rooted in the Rhône region since 1808. Michel took over the family business, Maison M. Chapoutier, in 1990, bringing with him a revitalized approach and a deep respect for terroir and biodynamic viticulture with the entire estate being certified, a rarity for an estate of its size. His philosophy is founded on the belief that a wine should express the place from which it originates, the "terroir". This approach involves minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery, ensuring the wines remain true reflections of their origin. Throughout his career, Michel Chapoutier's unyielding passion, combined with his pioneering approach, has earned his wines a plethora of accolades. Today, Maison M. Chapoutier remains a beacon of the Rhône Valley, with Michel at its helm, continually pushing the boundaries of winemaking and ensuring each bottle tells the story of its terroir.
