Tasting Notes

The 2023 Zeitgeist Shiraz presents a deep inky purple hue, setting the stage for an enticing experience. Its vivid aromatics burst forth, showcasing fresh ripe grapes, plum jam, and a hint of clove spice, intertwined with raisins, violets, and liquorice notes. This bright and primal bouquet captivates with its intense dark fruit character. On the palate, the wine reveals a rich tapestry of black and blue fruits, including blackcurrant, plum, and blueberry, all in full force. The vibrant flavors are complemented by pepper and spice, reflecting the unique qualities of the vintage. Lightly grippy tannins create a pleasant structure, leading to a long, dry finish. With its abundant fruit and radiant purity, the Zeitgeist Shiraz is best enjoyed now, allowing its primal characters to shine.

Harvest:The 2023 vintage has produced exceptional wines, characterized by a record-long growing season from mid-March to early May. A wet and cool spring provided ample subsoil moisture, followed by average summer temperatures and occasional rain. The vines thrived, leading to slow and steady ripening in autumn's mild days and cool nights. Overall, yields are good and quality is excellent.

Winemaking:Destemmed into an open-top fermenter where it was native yeast fermented for 7-11 days on skins with hand pump-overs employed twice daily. The musts were pressed and a portion of each lot was set aside in a stainless tank to create this Zeitgeist blend. Following natural malolactic fermentation and settling, the young wine was bottled forthwith, without sulphur dioxide, to capture the vibrancy and primacy of the vintage.

Viticulture:The Kalleske vineyard is a diverse mix of 120 acres of vines spread over the 500-acre farm. Shiraz dominates the plantings and multiple Shiraz blocks spanning from 1905 to 1994 were blended to make this wine. Shiraz from these blocks will go into the usual Kalleske Eduard, Greenock, Moppa and Clarry’s wines. All Shiraz vines are low-yielding and soils are typically shallow sand with excellent clay subsoil.

Food Pairing:Grilled steak, Lamb chops, BBQ ribs, Spaghetti bolognese, Pepper-crusted tuna steak, Beef stew, Mushroom risotto, Spicy sausage and peppers

Halliday Companion - Dave Brookes

The Kalleske family farm well and have been flying the biodynamic flag off the western ridge of the Barossa for many years. Their Zeitgeist comes from a multitude of blocks west of the Para River planted 1905–1998. Wild fermented, aged in stainless steel and bottled without sulphur dioxide, it's a wild-eyed, pure and raw rendering of a much-loved grape variety. Primal, dense, sapid and vivid. Wild stuff.

The Real Review - Gabrielle Poy

Opaque purple colour, with a touch of meaty-reduction on the nose, this has a huge cuddly core of black and red berries framed by a line of spicy oak. A cresecendo of tannins comes through towards the finish adding to its burly appeal. It's big with great freshness.

Kalleske

The Kalleske family, rooted in South Australia's Barossa Valley since 1853, is known for their exceptional grape-growing across seven generations. The journey began in 1853 when they founded their farm in Moppa, a sub-district of the Barossa Valley. Today, the property encompasses vineyards, livestock, a chaff mill, and a winery, maintained by the sixth and seventh generations. In 2002, brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske established the Kalleske winery to emphasize the potential of their vineyard through traditional winemaking. Their 120-acre estate, managed by John, Lorraine, and Kym Kalleske, features a variety of grapevines, some dating back to 1875, with an impressive average vine age of 50 years. The Kalleske estate has been proudly certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to organic practices in both their vineyard and winery.
