Tasting Notes

Frankland Estate Alter Weg Riesling is a masterclass in modern-meets-tradition, defined by texture, character, and purity. Wild-yeast barrel fermentation and extended lees aging shape a wine that opens with tangerine, fennel, and a saline lift, balancing citrus brightness with savoury nuance. The palate is juicy and mineral, unfolding layers of gun smoke, ironstone, and creamy texture, all wrapped in fine acidity and a long, clean, complex finish.

Harvest:2024 will be remembered for its dry, warm conditions from spring through to vintage. Good winter rains finished as soon as spring arrived, staying dry from then on. A number of warmer than average weeks in late January/early February pushed harvest forward by a number of weeks. This produced a small crop of great intensity. The fruit was harvested between 16th February and 1st March in the cool of the early morning.

Winemaking:No additions are used in the making of Alter Weg Riesling. The grapes are harvested as cool as possible and pressed immediately using slow, gentle press cycles to allow soft, extended juice extraction.

Viticulture:Alter Weg is sourced from small ferments of close-planted Geisenheim clone vines (planted 2006) and original Riesling blocks from 1988.

Food Pairing:Roast pork belly, Veal schnitzel, Miso-glazed cod.
