Tasting Notes

A lifted nose of spiced red plums, raspberries and star anise combine with red liquorice and cinnamon stick. The medium bodied palate displays cranberry confection, sour cherries and dried flowers, and is driven by a lovely acidity. The structure is silky, yet defined by chocolate-like tannins. This fruit driven Zinfandel is guaranteed to please as a young wine but will improve with careful cellaring over the years.

Country of Origin:Australia

Wine Ageing:18 months in French and American hogsheads.

Winemaking Style:Modern / low-intervention

Harvest:Grapes were harvested in the early hours of the morning.

Winemaking:The fruit was transferred by gravity in concrete vats without any crushing of the berries. Primary fermentation was completed by the indigenous yeast and the wine was gently pressed to old American and French hogsheads after 8 days for malo-lactic fermentation.

Viticulture:Lodi clone. 100% Hazel’s Vineyard. The southernmost vineyard, which is more inland than our Burnside and Calgardup vineyards, combines cooling Southern Ocean influences with a northerly aspect and plenty of sunshine. The fruit is sourced from a small block at the western side of our property where the Lodi clone vines deliver small and intense bunches of fruit.

Food Pairing:BBQ pulled pork, Spicy cajun jambalaya, Rib-eye steak, Pepperoni Pizza, Smoked brisket, Bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers, Lasagna.

Halliday Companion - Erin Larkin

Lodi clone, from Western corner of Hazel’s vineyard. Whole-berry ferment in concrete, 10 days on skins, pressed to seasoned American and French hogshead for 16 months. Wow – what a nose! An abundant spread of forest fruits; mulberry, raspberry, blackberry, five-spice and clove. Licorice and cocoa. The texture on the palate is chalky, the tannins soft but omnipresent. This is a cracker of a wine with balance, elegance and spice. It's got plushness and depth too, though.

The Real Review - Stuart Knox

Deep ruby and purple highlights. Blackberries, bitter chocolate and roast coffee bean aromatics. Big and bold on entry, dark fruits wash around the palate with vigour until a steadying hand of gravelly tannins brings control and drive. With that drive layers of earthy spices, bitter herbs sweet mocha notes become apparent. The structure carries great length and finishes dry and aromatic. I'm reminded more of Italian primitivo than American zinfandel.
