Tasting Notes

Saperavi, an indigenous gem of Georgia, derives its name from its rich, dark color and reddish flesh, earning it the moniker "dyer grape." These wines are not only visually striking but also known for their high acidity and tannin levels. In the Papari Valley tradition, wines gracefully navigates a multi-level terrace system of qvevri, where gravity gently guides the wine from one clay vat to the next, eschewing the need for pumping. In the glass, it presents a deep, almost ebony hue. Aromas unveil smoky, dark fruit, cherry liqueur, and intriguing hints of lactic and animal notes. Saperavi is a true reflection of Georgia's winemaking heritage, captivating in its authenticity and depth.

Papari Valley

Located in the heart of Kakheti, the epicenter of Georgia's winemaking, lies the Papari Valley winery. At the helm of this family-run endeavor are Nukri Kurdadze, his wife Keti, and their son Sandro. Their journey commenced in 2004 with the acquisition of a modest 2 hectares of vineyards, but over time, their ambition expanded their holdings. Here, the focus is on nurturing two of Georgia's most prized indigenous grape varieties: Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. Nukri Kurdadze's philosophy is a harmonious blend of modern Western winemaking techniques and the timeless wisdom of Georgian viniculture. This fusion comes to life through the Kakhetian winemaking process, a tradition treasured by the people of Georgia. In this ancient method, grapes and stems are gently crushed within the confines of traditional Georgian clay vessels known as Qvevri. Here, they ferment on the skins for an extended period, imparting layers of complexity and character to the wines.
