Tasting Notes

Reyneke was the first farm in South Africa to achieve certification by Demeter International, the largest, and arguably, the most widely acknowledged biodynamic accreditation body in the world. This Chenin Blanc has an upfront floral and white peach notes, with hints of pear and grapefruit on the nose. Notes of honey and melon start to become more apparent later on, in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with an almost saline feel on the tongue. The finish is long, well balanced and rounded.

Harvest:Hand-harvested and cooled overnight before being destemmed and sorted.

Winemaking:The grapes are bunch sorted and destemmed and then undergo natural fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After three months of ageing on the lees, the final wine is blended and bottled.

Viticulture:The Chenin blanc grapes are sourced from beautiful organic vineyards situated no further than 40km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The vines are planted in sandy and decomposed granitic soils, and these granitic soils add to the flavour profile of the grapes and final wine.

The 2019 Chenin Blanc displays precision and purity with aromas of white peach, yellow apple, sweet citrus and elements of pineapple, wax melon and dusty yellow flowers. Medium-bodied, it shows impeccable balance with a lively mouthfeel with energetic acidity that sways with a mineral tension, delivering a fresh, juicy mid-palate with a subtle, growing essence of petrichor, white spice and sautéed almonds. The finish is thoughtful and lingering with notes of lemon peel, peach skin and a kiss of phenolic bitterness. These wines remain a consistent crowd-pleaser and are incredibly food friendly and versatile.

A nimble, vital and textured Chenin from the oldest vineyards (44 to 46 years old) on the Reyneke farm. Whole-bunch pressed then naturally fermented in new and seasoned barriques plus 2,500-litre foudres, with 10 months on lees. Aromas of white peach, lemongrass, ginger, exotic spices and florals lead to a lengthy, layered mid-weight palate. There's great tension and drive, with sea spray freshness lifting flavours of nougat, quince and papaya.

The Reyneke family established their farm in 1863. The farm's name aptly describes its breathtaking surroundings: majestic mountains to the northeast, the famous False Bay surfer's paradise to the south, and the iconic city of Cape Town to the west. Johan Reyneke, the current steward of the estate, shares a unique bond with False Bay. Had it not been for his deep-seated passion for gradually transforming his parents' farm into a biodynamic model, he might have pursued a career as a professional surfer.
