Organic Crémant FAQ
What’s the difference between Crémant and Champagne? Both are made using the traditional method: a second fermentation in bottle followed by ageing on lees, which creates the bubbles and adds complexity. Champagne must come from the Champagne region and requires at least 15 months on lees for non‑vintage wines, while Crémant comes from other French regions such as Loire, Burgundy and Alsace and typically requires 9–12 months. This shorter ageing time is a major reason Crémant can offer similar quality at a lower price.
Why choose organic Crémant? Organic certification prohibits synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers in the vineyard. Grapes grown in healthier soils develop more authentic, site‑driven flavours, and organic wines are generally subject to tighter limits on total sulphur dioxide. Many drinkers find the result cleaner and more transparent in the glass, and it supports producers committed to long‑term soil health and biodiversity.
Which Crémant should I start with?
-
Jaillance Crémant de Loire: bright, fruit‑forward and versatile; a great entry point.
-
Baron Jacques Crémant de Bourgogne: Chardonnay‑based, more complex and very food‑friendly for the price.
-
Albert Mann Crémant d’Alsace Extra Brut 2018: vintage, extra‑dry and mineral, for those who prefer precision and structure. All three are ready to drink now; no cellaring required.
How long will an open bottle stay fresh? If re‑sealed with a good sparkling wine stopper and kept in the fridge, Crémant will generally show well for 1–3 days, though the bubbles will start to soften after about 24 hours. For optimum sparkle and definition, it is best enjoyed within the first day.
Can I cellar Crémant? Most Crémant is made to be enjoyed in the first two to three years for its freshness and energy. Vintage examples like the Albert Mann 2018 can develop further complexity over the next 3–5 years if stored correctly (cool, dark and on their side), but they are already drinking beautifully now.
