Tasting Notes

2023 Old Vine Grenache is deep maroon in colour. The aromatics are vivid with lifted notes of sweet spice, musk, raspberry jam, flower garden, dried fruit medley, and a trace of choc mint. The richly flavoured palate is generous with varietal red, blue, and black fruits all evident. Naturally soft tannins provide a framework for the plush fruit, adding a pleasant chewiness without intruding. Seasoned oak maturation is courteous to the incredible old vine dry-grown fruit intensity. Extremely lengthy to finish, the varietal purity almost endless. Harmonious throughout, stylish fruit is the hallmark of this wine.

Harvest:Vintage 2023 has produced exceptional wines. It was the longest and latest on record, stretching from mid-March to early May. The vines started superbly with a wet and cool Spring providing plenty of sub-soil moisture for the growing season ahead. Summer typically brought average temperatures and was generally dry with occasional finite rain. The vines were in fantastic condition for slow and steady ripening into Autumn with its mild days, cool nights, and isolated light rain. Yields from 2023 are good and quality is excellent.

Winemaking:Grapes were destemmed into an opentop fermenter. The must was fermented using native yeast and the fermenting juice was pumped-over twice daily for flavour and colour extraction for the 8 day fermentation. The must was then traditionally pressed and filled into a barrel.

Viticulture:Made from a single vineyard planted in 1935 as bush vines on the Kalleske farm. The vineyard soil is shallow sand with light clay subsoil and the grapes are entirely dry-grown ensuring intensely flavoured fruit.

Food Pairing:Roast lamb with rosemary, Coq au vin, Lamb tagine, Beef and chorizo paella, Grilled portobello mushrooms, Pork tenderloin with red wine jus, Roasted red pepper and eggplant dip.

Kalleske

The Kalleske family, rooted in South Australia's Barossa Valley since 1853, is known for their exceptional grape-growing across seven generations. The journey began in 1853 when they founded their farm in Moppa, a sub-district of the Barossa Valley. Today, the property encompasses vineyards, livestock, a chaff mill, and a winery, maintained by the sixth and seventh generations. In 2002, brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske established the Kalleske winery to emphasize the potential of their vineyard through traditional winemaking. Their 120-acre estate, managed by John, Lorraine, and Kym Kalleske, features a variety of grapevines, some dating back to 1875, with an impressive average vine age of 50 years. The Kalleske estate has been proudly certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to organic practices in both their vineyard and winery.
