Tasting Notes

Ingenue Viognier reveals ripe white peach notes that are interwoven with sea spray minerals, and scents of sweet pea in the air. Mandarin flavoured acidity winds its way through the palate picking up elements of fennel, musk and lotus along the way. This wine is all about minerality and structure. Freshness in a bottle. Everything you want a white wine to be and more.

The Wine Front - Mike Bennie

Scents of stone fruit, jasmine, white pepper. Rich in the palate, slippery and supremely long, a core of bustling, assertive acidity, flavoured like mixed stone fruit and ripe apple with licks of nuttiness underlying. Length, texture, velocity, detailed flavours, so wonderfully drinkable and so much to pause on and enjoy.

The Real Review - Huon Hooke

The colour is lightly copper-tinged, ramato-like, and the bouquet is very floral and talcum-powdery, with some pinot gris-like spice perfume and the palate is soft and rounded, with some textural oiliness and gentle mouth-feel. Hints of dried banana. The palate is very dry and the dryness is accentuated by strong phenolics, which also impart a certain bitterness. It demands food. Long, resonant aftertaste. A character-filled wine.

Castagna

Julian and Carolann Castagna left their careers in the film industry to establish Castagna Vineyard. They aimed to create unique wines capturing the essence of Côte-Rôtie, a style then rare in Australia. Located in Northeast Victoria, the vineyard, certified organic and biodynamic, features Syrah vines planted in 1997, descendants of 1850s Rhone stock. With a focus on quality over quantity, their meticulous approach includes hand-pruning, hand-picking, traditional winemaking techniques, and careful aging in French oak. The vineyard's biodynamic practices highlight the granitic-loam soil's minerality, and they utilize rare genetic material from Australia to craft exceptional wines. The vineyard's continental climate and unique soil composition further contribute to their distinctive wines. Castagna Vineyard has successfully carved out its niche in the world of wine.
