Tasting Notes

Old Vine Grenache is deep burgundy-red in colour. Elevated aromatics jump from the glass indicating a stunning wine awaits. Enticing and energetic with bright musk, ripe raspberry, sweet spice, sandalwood, red liquorice, lavender and a touch of mint. The palate is soft, rich and full-flavoured. Plush varietal Grenache fruit is intense with juicy flavours of black cherry and sarsaparilla. Natural tannins give a fine backbone and flawless structure. The wine is rich throughout, from the grand start to its lengthy finish it exudes old vine Grenache character.

Country of Origin:Australia

Serving Temperature:18-20°C

Wine Ageing:14 months in seasoned American and French oak hogsheads.

Winemaking Style:Traditional / low-intervention

Harvest:Vintage 2020 has delivered wines of amazing quality. However, quantity is very limited, with it being one of the lowest grape yields ever in the Barossa. Hand-picked.

Winemaking:Grapes were destemmed into an opentop fermenter. The must was fermented using native yeast and the fermenting juice was pumped-over twice daily for flavour and colour extraction for the 8 day fermentation. The must was then traditionally pressed and filled into a barrel.

Viticulture:Made from a single vineyard planted in 1935 as bush vines on the Kalleske farm. The vineyard soil is shallow sand with light clay subsoil and the grapes are entirely dry-grown ensuring intensely flavoured fruit.

Food Pairing:Roast lamb with rosemary, Coq au vin, Lamb tagine, Beef and chorizo paella, Grilled portobello mushrooms, Pork tenderloin with red wine jus, Roasted red pepper and eggplant dip.

Halliday Companion - Dave Brookes

Sourced from a single patch of bush-vine grenache planted in 1935 on the Kalleske farm in the western Barossa. There's a red-fruited aromatic presence here, red and yellow plums, a splash of raspberry coulis, plenty of ginger spice and an almost musky, pressed-flower aspect. That floral component leaps forth again on the palate with ripe macerated raspberry notes, gingerbread and plenty of spice, finishing savoury with just a touch of heat.

The Wine Front - Mike Bennie

Mix of red berry, malt, toast, char, game meat. A rippling, deeper grenache here with inky intensity, strong seasoning and darker, malty, chewy expression missing a bit of energy but delivering a bigger, dustier red for those seeking that.

The Real Review - Huon Hooke

Deepish red/purple colour, with a talcy perfume and overtones of herbal, slightly green fruit. There is a dollop of apparent sweetness on the mid and fore-palates, counteracting some green, sappy tannins. The astringency is an obstacle. More time suggested.

Kalleske

The Kalleske family, rooted in South Australia's Barossa Valley since 1853, is known for their exceptional grape-growing across seven generations. The journey began in 1853 when they founded their farm in Moppa, a sub-district of the Barossa Valley. Today, the property encompasses vineyards, livestock, a chaff mill, and a winery, maintained by the sixth and seventh generations. In 2002, brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske established the Kalleske winery to emphasize the potential of their vineyard through traditional winemaking. Their 120-acre estate, managed by John, Lorraine, and Kym Kalleske, features a variety of grapevines, some dating back to 1875, with an impressive average vine age of 50 years. The Kalleske estate has been proudly certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to organic practices in both their vineyard and winery.
