In the last few years, the world has started embracing "natural" wines - wines made without chemical additives and with minimal technological intervention, representing a movement that seeks authenticity, minimalism, and sustainable winemaking. This 'natural' approach has grown significantly in popularity and is now appealing to most wine drinkers, including the youthful, health-conscious, or anyone in search of a more genuine experience with wines. Due to impressive and, at times, provocative labels and their commitment to natural, low-intervention wine-growing techniques, 'natural' wines have become an integral part of a lifestyle.
In fact, ‘natural’ wine has no legal definition, although different certifications exist, such as ABN and SANS. It usually means that grapes come from certified organic vineyards, but sometimes that is the exception. More often, it means minimal intervention in winemaking, with minimal additions and as little sulphur dioxide as possible at bottling. Many examples are unfiltered and unfinned, but that is not a rule. Above all, it is a philosophy of a hands-off approach in winemaking, which has gathered an international following and created a 'cult' movement worldwide around a 'natural' style and some renowned producers. We are fans of the natural wine philosophy and stock several examples of this style. FAB also provides natural wine delivery to any region in Australia.
Crafting a great natural wine is challenging. Producers face a significant undertaking because they use only natural methods, avoiding additives, chemicals, or technological shortcuts in the vineyard and cellar. Instead, producers use their instincts and experience to create something extraordinary, focusing on quality grapes. Some argue that ‘natural’ wines, sometimes perceived as flawed, cannot match the standard of conventional wines. However, properly crafted natural wines are exceptional, offering rich, fresh, and distinctive flavours that express their origins fully.
How We Embrace Natural Wines at FAB
The principles of natural winemaking we've discussed guide our selection process at FAB. We are excited to showcase a collection of extraordinary natural wines, featuring curated offerings from innovative producers who are pushing the boundaries of what wine can be. These wines embody the philosophy of minimal intervention, organic farming, and the belief that wine should reflect its environment in the most honest way possible. Whenever you buy a FAB wine, you can make sure that it is a certified organic wine.
One standout from our selection is Vin De Soif, a small-batch winemaking project led by Alistair Blackwell and Tobias Ansted. Their philosophy revolves around producing wines that are fun, approachable, and perfect for leisurely Sunday sips. With a focus on Rhône grape varieties, their wines are crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the grapes and terroir to speak for themselves. The wines are sourced from small, certified organic vineyards in Heathcote, where vines between 10 and 15 years old thrive in the region’s calcium-rich Cambrian soil. The result? The result is intriguing, textural wines that showcase freshness and drinkability – ideal for any occasion.
Another gem in our collection is the Chakana Sobrenatural Bonarda, a vibrant, organic, and biodynamic wine made without any added sulphites. This Bonarda bursts with juicy cherry aromas and herbal nuances that add complexity. On the palate, the wine is fruit-forward, with subtle tannins and crisp acidity. The Chakana ethos extends beyond the wine itself, embracing a philosophy of respect for the land and sustainability. The name "Chakana" is inspired by the Southern Cross constellation, a symbol held in reverence by indigenous Andean communities. Just as the stars guide the way, Chakana's wines aim to lead the industry towards a more sustainable, mindful future.
We also feature Loveblock, a wine brand that brings together two passionate, innovative figures – Erica and Kim Crawford. Their approach is rooted in sustainable, low-intervention farming, allowing the land to dictate the wines' expression. Loveblock’s wines, particularly their exceptional offerings from Marlborough, reveal the true character of the region’s terroir. A perfect example is their elegant wine with lifted aromas of mandarin zest, quince, yellow peach, and sweet basil, complemented by a distinct wet stone minerality. The wine’s palate is layered with juicy mandarin, earthy cumin, and ripe yellow starfruit, offering a fresh and clean finish with mild tannins. This wine is a testament to the potential of sustainable, mindful viticulture.
Why Natural Wines Matter
‘Natural’ wines represent a deeper connection to the land, the people who cultivate it, and the traditions that have shaped winemaking over centuries. By choosing them, you’re most often supporting producers who are committed to sustainability, minimal intervention, and organic farming practices. These wines embody a philosophy of honesty, respect, and care for the environment.
